Dynamics of Solid‐Electrolyte Interphase Formation on Silicon Electrodes Revealed by Combinatorial Electrochemical Screening

نویسندگان

چکیده

Revealing how formation protocols influence the properties of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Si electrodes is key to developing next generation Li-ion batteries. SEI understanding is, however, limited by low-throughput nature conventional characterisation techniques. Herein, correlative scanning electrochemical cell microscopy (SECCM) and shell-isolated nanoparticle-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SHINERS) are used for combinatorial screening under a broad experimental space (20 sets different conditions with several repeats). This novel approach reveals heterogeneous dynamics chemical composition electrodes, which evolve in characteristic manner as function cycle number. Correlative SECCM/SHINERS has potential screen thousands candidate experiments variety battery materials accelerate optimization methods, bottleneck manufacturing.

Examining Solid Electrolyte Interphase Formation on Crystalline Silicon Electrodes: Influence of Electrochemical Preparation and Ambient Exposure Conditions

Since the potential for alloying lithium with silicon is outside the window of stability of common commercial electrolytes, silicon surfaces form an amorphous solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) under applied potential, which hampers silicon's performance as a lithium-ion battery anode. We have investigated the composition, distribution, and ambient stability of the SEI formed on undoped silicon...

Multiprobe Study of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase on Silicon-Based Electrodes in Full-Cell Configuration

The failure mechanism of silicon-based electrodes has been studied only in a half-cell configuration so far. Here, a combination of 7Li, 19F MAS NMR, XPS, TOF-SIMS, and STEM-EELS, provides an in-depth characterization of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) formation on the surface of silicon and its evolution upon aging and cycling with LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 as the positive electrode in a full...

Lithium-assisted electrochemical welding in silicon nanowire battery electrodes.

From in situ transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations, we present direct evidence of lithium-assisted welding between physically contacted silicon nanowires (SiNWs) induced by electrochemical lithiation and delithiation. This electrochemical weld between two SiNWs demonstrates facile transport of lithium ions and electrons across the interface. From our in situ observations, we estim...
